The Phleng chāt Thai (เพลงชาติไทย) is the official national anthem of Thailand. It's often called just Phleng chāt (เพลงชาติ), which means "National Anthem" in Thai. This special song represents the country and its people.

Thailand also has a royal anthem called Sansœ̄n Phra Bāramī. This song is played to honor the King.

The Story of Thailand's Anthem

How the Music Was Made

The music for Thailand's national anthem was created in 1932. A talented Thai musician named Phra Chenduriyang composed it. When it was first adopted, the song had no words. It was just music.

Adding the Official Lyrics

Later, in 1939, Thailand changed its name. Before, it was known as "Siam". After the change, the country became "Thailand". To celebrate this, a competition was held to find official lyrics (words) for the anthem. The words written by Luang Saranupraphan won this competition. His lyrics were then made the official words for the national anthem.

The Words of the Anthem

The national anthem has powerful words that talk about the Thai people, their land, and their spirit. Here are the lyrics in Thai, how they sound, and what they mean in English.

English Meaning

Prathēt thai rūam lư̄at nư̄a chāt chư̄a thai
Pen prachā rat, phathai khǭng thai thuk sūan
Yū damrong khǭng wai dāi thang mūan
Dūai thai lūan māi, rak samakkhī
Thai nī rak sangop, tǣ thư̄ng rop mai khlāt
Ēkkarāt cha mai hai khrai khom khī
Sala lư̄at thuk yāt pen chāt phalī
Thalœ̄ng prathēt chāt thai thawī, mī chai, chayō!

The flesh and blood of ev'ry Thai united,
The land of Thailand to the Thais belongeth,
Their sovereignty hath always long endured,
For the Thais love and unity pursueth,
Though the Thais love peace, dauntlessly we fight;
No tyrant can take our freedom away,
The Thais will give up every drop of blood,
Long last the nation's pride and victory, hooray!
