Civic Space Park is a cool city park in Downtown Phoenix, Arizona. It opened its doors to the public in April 2009. You can find it right across Central Avenue from the main part of the ASU Downtown Campus. It's also located just north of the Central Station, where you can catch the METRO Light Rail and buses.

How Civic Space Park Was Created

Before Civic Space Park was built, this area was a mix of old buildings and parking lots. The City of Phoenix bought these properties to create the park. One important building that was updated for the park is called the A.E. England Building. It first opened in the 1920s as a place where cars were sold. Today, it has shops and a community room for special events.

Cool Features of the Park

A big part of the park, more than 70%, will be covered in shade once all the trees grow big. This shade comes from both trees and special shade structures. These structures also have solar panels on top. These panels make electricity, producing 75 kilowatts of power!

The most eye-catching part of the park is a huge sculpture called Her Secret Is Patience. It was created by an artist named Janet Echelman and cost about $2.4 million. The sculpture is made of colorful fiber nets that hang up to 145 feet (44 m) in the air. At night, special colored lights on the ground shine on the sculpture. These lights change with the seasons, making the artwork look different from how it appears during the day.

Awards and Recognition

In 2011, Civic Space Park won a special award called the Rudy Bruner Award for Urban Excellence silver medal. This award recognizes great urban spaces that help communities.
