What is the Big Buddha?
The Big Buddha is a massive statue of Buddha, a spiritual teacher whose teachings are the foundation of Buddhism. This particular statue is being built in Phuket, a beautiful island in Thailand. Its full name, Puttamingmongkol Akenakkiri, means something like "Glorious Buddha of the Naga Mountain".
Building This Giant Statue
The Big Buddha is a huge project. When it's fully completed, it will stand 45 meters (148 feet) tall. The base of the statue will be 25 meters (82 feet) wide. It faces east towards Phang Nga Bay, which is a famous and beautiful part of Thailand. Behind it, to the west, is the Andaman Sea.
Building such a large statue costs a lot of money. It is believed to cost more than 30 million Thai baht. A baht is the money used in Thailand. This money comes from donations, showing how much people want to see this special statue finished.
Visiting the Big Buddha
Even though the Big Buddha is still being built, visitors can come and see it. There is no fee to enter the site. Many people visit to see the progress and enjoy the amazing views from the top of the hill. From here, you can see much of Phuket island, the sparkling sea, and the green mountains.
While visiting, you might see places where you can make a small donation. These donations help to pay for the building and upkeep of the statue. It's a way for visitors to contribute to this important landmark.
