Becoming an Illustrator

Phyllis Chase went to St. Christopher's School in Beckenham, England. There, she became good friends with a girl named Enid Blyton. Enid Blyton later became one of the most famous children's authors of all time.

Years after leaving school, Phyllis and Enid met again at a garden party in 1920. They decided to work together, starting a long and successful partnership.

Illustrating Enid Blyton's Books

Phyllis Chase is best known for drawing pictures for Enid Blyton's early books. These include Child Whispers (published in 1922) and Real Fairies: Poems. Her beautiful illustrations helped bring Blyton's stories to life for young readers.

Throughout the 1920s, Phyllis also illustrated many of Blyton's short stories. These stories appeared in popular newspapers and magazines, often published by companies like Cassell. She also contributed to books like Pinkity's Pranks and Other Nature Fairy Tales and The Nursery Book (1927).

Her artwork helped shape the look of many beloved children's tales. In 1975, Phyllis Chase was interviewed on BBC Radio, sharing her experiences as an illustrator.
