Pia Juul (born May 30, 1962 – died September 30, 2020) was a famous Danish writer. She wrote many poems and stories. She also worked as a translator, changing books from English and Swedish into Danish. Pia Juul won several awards for her writing. She was also a member of the important Danish Academy. This is a group of experts who work to improve Danish language and literature. She also taught writing at a special school in Copenhagen.

Early Life and Education

Pia Juul was born in Korsør, Denmark, in 1962. Her parents were teachers at a folk high school. This is a type of school for adults in Denmark. She grew up in a town called Skælskør. When she was six, her family moved to a village named Rørbæk.

Pia Juul finished high school in Hobro in 1981. After that, she started studying English at Aarhus University. However, she later decided to leave the university.

A Career in Writing and Translation

Pia Juul's first book was a collection of poems. It was called levende og lukket and came out in 1985. Besides writing her own books, she also translated many works. She translated literature from English, American, and Swedish authors. This was how she earned her living.

In 1986, Pia Juul became a mother to a daughter. From 1989 to 1993, she helped edit a Danish literary magazine. It was called Den Blå Port. She also served on the board for Danish Fiction Writers from 1993 to 1995. Later, she joined the literary committee of the Danish Arts Foundation in 1996.

Awards and Recognition

Pia Juul received many honors for her writing. In 2000, she won the Beatrice Prize from the Danish Academy. This is a very important award for writers in Denmark. Five years later, in 2005, she became a member of the Danish Academy herself.

In the fall of 2005, she started teaching. She taught at Forfatterskolen, which is a writing school. In 2009, she won another big award. It was the Danske Banks Litteraturpris for her novel Mordet på Halland.

Standing Up for Digital Rights

In 2013, there were big news stories about governments watching people online. This was called global surveillance. Pia Juul joined over a thousand writers from all over the world. Famous writers like Umberto Eco also signed. They asked for new rules to protect people's digital rights. They wanted to stop governments and companies from misusing technology to watch people.

Pia Juul passed away in 2020. She was 58 years old.
