The black-dotted piculet (Picumnus nigropunctatus) is a small and unique bird. It is part of the woodpecker family, Picidae. This special bird lives only in Venezuela. It is sometimes called the black-spotted piculet.

Bird Names: What's in a Name?

Scientists often discuss how to classify different animals. For the black-dotted piculet, its exact place in the bird family tree is still being decided. Some experts think it might be the same species as the white-bellied piculet or the golden-spangled piculet. Others believe it is a subspecies of the scaled piculet.

Organizations like the International Ornithological Committee (IOC) and BirdLife International currently consider it a separate species. However, other groups, like the Clements taxonomy, see it as a type of scaled piculet. This shows how scientists work together to understand the natural world!

What Does the Black-Dotted Piculet Look Like?

The black-dotted piculet looks a lot like other birds in its group, Picumnus. But it has some special features:

  • Underparts: Its belly and chest are a pale, pure yellow. You can see small black dots on its lower chest and sometimes on its belly.
  • Head: The top of its head is black. Males have thin red streaks on the front part of their head. Both males and females have clear white dots on the back of their heads. Some females might have white dots all over the top of their heads.
  • Upperparts: Its back and wings are a light olive-brown color, with a slight yellowish tint. It also has darker spots on its shoulders and back.

Sometimes, a few of these birds in southeastern Sucre have finely barred chests. Rarely, some piculets might have scaly throats and a pale buffy color instead of yellow underparts. These can look a bit like the scaled piculet. However, you can tell them apart because the scaled piculet has scaly lower underparts.

Where Do Black-Dotted Piculets Live?

The black-dotted piculet is found in specific areas of Venezuela. It is quite common in places with bushes or trees. These areas are often near water or in wet, swampy spots. You can find them in the coastal lowlands of Venezuela. This includes areas between southeastern Sucre and southern Delta Amacuro. They usually live at elevations below 100 meters (about 330 feet). They might even live in mangrove forests!

How Do Black-Dotted Piculets Behave?

Finding Food: What Do They Eat?

Black-dotted piculets usually look for food in pairs. Sometimes, they forage alone. They might even join groups of different bird species looking for food together. These birds are good at moving sideways along tree branches. They often peck or drill into rotting wood. They also look for food at the broken ends of branches.

Bird Songs: What Do They Sound Like?

The song of the black-dotted piculet is very unique. It sounds like "2 to several extremely high, thin notes." Each note is a little lower than the one before it, like tseeet, tseeet, tsee, and so on. They might also use this sound to call to each other. When they are looking for food, they might sing a few times. Then, they can stay quiet for several minutes before singing again.

Is the Black-Dotted Piculet in Danger?

The IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) has assessed the black-dotted piculet as being of "Least Concern." This means it is not currently considered to be in immediate danger of extinction. However, it only lives in a small area. Scientists do not know exactly how many of these birds there are, but they believe the number is going down. Even so, no major threats have been found for this species right now.
