The Pierce Block is a really old building in downtown Tulsa, Oklahoma. It's located at the corner of Third Street and Detroit Avenue. This building was first built as a hotel in 1909. The Tulsa Preservation Commission says it's the oldest hotel still standing in Tulsa that was built after Oklahoma became a state. When it was new, it was just a few blocks from the Midland Valley Railroad passenger station.

What Does the Building Look Like?

The Pierce Block has a simple, practical design. It's made of painted brick. On the ground floor, there were big windows for stores. There was also a special entrance for the hotel. Above the hotel door, you can see a stone that says "Pierce Block 1909."

A stone line separates the first and second floors. The second floor has nine windows with rounded tops. The third floor has rectangular windows. These windows are separated by horizontal brick lines. The top of the building has flat roof.

How Was the Pierce Block Used?

For 70 years, the Pierce Block was used as a hotel. The hotel rooms were on the second and third floors. The ground floor was for shops. A clothing store called Mammoth Credit Company was there until 1929.

After 1948, many printing companies used the building. Later, a paint store, a vending machine company, and a billiard hall were also there. Most recently, a local TV station had its offices in the building. The old Midland Valley train station nearby closed in 1931. All train services moved to the Union Depot.

Why is the Pierce Block Important?

The Pierce Block is very important to Tulsa's history. It's the second oldest building in Tulsa that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The oldest is the Dawson School. Being on this list means the building is special and worth protecting. Its official number is 79002033.
