About Pierre Coffin
Pierre Coffin was born in France on March 16, 1967. His mother, Nh. Dini, was a novelist from Indonesia. His father, Yves Coffin, was a French diplomat. Pierre also has a sister named Marie-Claire.
Early Life and Inspiration
When Pierre was a child, his family moved around a lot in Asia. They lived in countries like Cambodia and Japan. In the 1970s, they settled in a suburb of Paris, France.
Pierre's father did not let them watch much television. He thought it made people too lazy. Instead, Pierre spent his time drawing, reading, and listening to music. Even though he never thought about a career in art, his friends who were good at drawing inspired him. He worked hard to improve his own drawing skills.
Education and First Jobs
From 1985 to 1988, Pierre studied cinema at the Paris-Sorbonne University. After that, he took an entrance exam for a famous animation school in Paris called Gobelins. He passed the exam and studied 2D animation there from 1990 to 1993.
After Gobelins, Pierre worked as a junior animator at Amblin, a studio in London. He helped create the movie We're Back! A Dinosaur's Story, which was produced by Steven Spielberg. Later, he became a freelance animator and animation supervisor at a French studio called Ex Machina.
Directing and Creating Characters
Pierre Coffin started his directing career with a short film called Pings in 1997. He then began working on commercials with companies like Passion Pictures Paris and Mac Guff. He also created the characters Pat & Stan for a TV show.
In 2010, he finished directing the animated movie Despicable Me with Chris Renaud. This movie was made for Universal Pictures.
Pierre Coffin's Work on Despicable Me and Minions
Pierre Coffin has directed many popular animated films. He directed Despicable Me (2010) and Despicable Me 2 (2013) with Chris Renaud. He also directed Despicable Me 3 (2017) and the spin-off movie Minions (2015) with Kyle Balda.
Voicing the Minions
One of Pierre's most famous roles is providing the voice for the Minions. He has voiced them in every movie in the Despicable Me and Minions series. This includes Minions: The Rise of Gru (2022) and Despicable Me 4 (2024).
When he recorded the Minion voices for the Minions movie, he made different versions. He mixed in local words depending on the country where the movie would be shown. This helped the Minions appeal to audiences all over the world.
