Pierre Coffin (born March 16, 1967) is a talented French animator, director, writer, producer, and voice actor. He is most famous for helping to direct the first four movies in the Despicable Me series. He is also the main voice for the funny Minions characters. For his work as the Minions' voice, he won the Kids Family Award. He was also nominated for an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature for the movie Despicable Me 2.

Life and Career

Pierre Coffin was born in France on March 16, 1967. His mother, Nh. Dini, was a novelist from Indonesia. His father, Yves Coffin, was a French diplomat. Pierre has a sister named Marie-Claire.

When he was a child, his family moved around a lot in Asia. They lived in countries like Cambodia and Japan. In the 1970s, they settled in a suburb of Paris, France.

Growing up, Pierre's father did not let them watch much television. He thought TV made people too lazy. Instead, Pierre spent his time drawing, reading, and listening to music. Even though he never planned to work in art, his friends who were good at drawing inspired him. He then worked hard to improve his own drawing skills.

From 1985 to 1988, Pierre studied cinema at the Paris-Sorbonne University. Later, he took an exam to get into the Gobelins animation school in Paris. He passed and studied 2D animation there from 1990 to 1993.

After school, he worked for a year at Amblin, a studio in London. There, he was a junior animator on the movie We're Back! A Dinosaur's Story. This movie was produced by Steven Spielberg.

Pierre then became a freelance animator at a French computer graphics studio called Ex Machina. He worked as an animator and later became an animation supervisor.

Pierre Coffin started his directing career with a short film called Pings in 1997. He then began making commercials with companies like Passion Pictures Paris and Mac Guff. He also created the characters Pat & Stan for a TV series on TF1.

In 2010, he finished directing the animated movie Despicable Me for Universal. He directed this film with Chris Renaud.

Pierre Coffin has directed many popular animated films. He co-directed Despicable Me (2010) and Despicable Me 2 (2013) with Chris Renaud. He also directed Despicable Me 3 (2017) and the Minions spin-off movie, Minions (2015), with Kyle Balda.

He is also the voice of the Minions in all the Despicable Me and Minions movies. This includes Minions: The Rise of Gru (2022) and Despicable Me 4 (2024). Pierre Coffin will also direct Minions 3, which is planned for release in 2026.

For the Minions movie, Coffin recorded different versions of the Minion voices. He mixed in local words for different countries. This helped the movie appeal to audiences around the world.

Currently, Pierre Coffin is working on two web series for Illumination. These shows, called Who's Who and Bones Story, will first appear on TikTok and then on YouTube.

Pierre Coffin has two children.
