Movie Story: Gru's New Adventure

This section tells you what happens in Despicable Me 3. It's all about Gru and his family facing new challenges.

Gru and Lucy Lose Their Jobs

The movie starts with Gru and Lucy Wilde working as agents for the Anti-Villain League (AVL). They are trying to stop a new supervillain named Balthazar Bratt. Bratt used to be a child actor whose TV show was canceled. Now he wants revenge.

Gru gets a special diamond back from Bratt, but Bratt still gets away. Because Bratt escaped, the new AVL director, Valerie Da Vinci, fires both Gru and Lucy. They go home and tell their adopted daughters, Margo, Edith, and Agnes, the news. Gru promises they will find new jobs soon.

Minions Leave Gru

Gru does not want to go back to being a supervillain. His assistant, Dr. Nefario, is frozen in carbonite. Because of this, most of Gru's Minions decide to leave him. They are led by a Minion named Mel.

The Minions want to find new jobs for themselves. Only Dave and Jerry stay with Gru. The other Minions have many funny adventures. They even end up in jail for a while!

Meeting Dru: Gru's Twin Brother

One day, a butler named Fritz arrives at Gru's house. He brings an invitation from Gru's long-lost twin brother, Dru. Gru never knew he had a twin! Dru lives in a faraway country called Freedonia.

The whole family travels to Freedonia to meet Dru. They are amazed by how rich Dru is and how huge his mansion is. Fritz says Dru's success comes from their big pig farming business.

Balthazar Bratt's Plan

While Gru is meeting Dru, Balthazar Bratt steals the diamond again. He plans to use it to power a giant robot. Bratt wants to destroy Hollywood with this robot. This is his way of getting back at Hollywood for canceling his old TV show.

Dru tells Gru a big secret. Their father was a supervillain known as "the Bald Terror." Their family's wealth actually comes from his villain activities and advanced technology. Dru wants Gru to teach him how to be a villain. But Gru refuses to go back to his old ways.

Brothers Work Together

Lucy tries to get used to her new tasks as a mother. Meanwhile, Gru and Dru become closer. They even have fun riding in their father's high-tech vehicle. Gru and Dru decide to steal the diamond back from Bratt.

Gru secretly plans to give the diamond to the AVL. He hopes this will convince Director Da Vinci to rehire him and Lucy. They get the diamond back and Lucy helps them escape. Dru finds out Gru's true plan and feels hurt. Gru also insults Dru, and they argue. Gru says he will leave Freedonia and end their relationship.

Saving Hollywood

Bratt, disguised as Lucy, kidnaps the children. He also gets the diamond back again. Gru and Dru put their differences aside and chase after him. Bratt uses the diamond to power his robot. He attacks Hollywood, covering it in super-strong bubble gum. He wants to lift the city into outer space.

Lucy rescues the girls. Bratt tries to use the robot's laser to attack Gru. Dru manages to get inside the robot and turn it off. He almost gets hurt doing this. Bratt then faces Gru. Gru challenges him to a dance fight. Gru eventually steals Bratt's special keytar weapon and defeats him.

Family Reunion and New Beginnings

The Minions, who escaped from jail, reunite with Gru. Dru and Gru also make up and become friends again. Gru and Lucy get their jobs back at the AVL.

The family celebrates together at Gru's home. Lucy feels a strong connection with the girls and sees them as her own daughters. Dru, along with most of the Minions, steals Gru's aircraft and flies away. Gru and Lucy decide to give them a five-minute head start before they chase after them.
