The Story of Despicable Me 3
Gru and Lucy's New Challenge
The movie begins with Gru and Lucy Wilde, who are agents for the Anti-Villain League (AVL). Their mission is to get back the Dumont Diamond. This diamond was stolen by Balthazar Bratt. Bratt is a former child actor who became a supervillain. He was upset because his TV show, Evil Bratt, was canceled.
Gru gets the diamond, but Bratt gets away. Back at the AVL, the director, Silas Ramsbottom, retires. A new director, Valerie Da Vinci, takes over. She fires Gru and Lucy because they didn't catch Bratt.
Life Without the AVL
Gru and Lucy go home to their adopted daughters, Margo, Edith, and Agnes. They tell the girls they lost their jobs. Gru doesn't want to be a supervillain again. His assistant, Dr. Nefario, is accidentally frozen. Because of this, most of Gru's Minions, led by Mel, leave him. They want to find new work. The Minions end up getting into trouble for going into a TV studio without permission.
Meeting Dru, Gru's Twin Brother
Soon, a butler named Fritz visits Gru. He brings an invitation from Gru's long-lost twin brother, Dru. Dru lives in a faraway country called Freedonia. The whole family travels to meet Dru. They are amazed by his huge mansion and great wealth.
Meanwhile, Bratt steals the diamond again. He plans to use it to power a giant robot. His goal is to destroy Hollywood as revenge. Dru tells Gru that their father was a famous supervillain called "the Bald Terror." Their father's inventions and villain activities are the source of their family's riches. Dru wants Gru to teach him how to be a villain. But Gru doesn't want to go back to his old ways. Lucy tries her best to be a good mother. Gru and Dru start to bond while riding in their father's cool high-tech car.
A Plan Gone Wrong
Gru and Dru decide to steal the diamond back. Gru secretly plans to give it to the AVL. He hopes this will get him and Lucy their jobs back. They manage to escape with the diamond, and Lucy helps them. Dru finds out Gru's real plan. He gets very upset that Gru lied about teaching him to be a villain. Gru gets angry too, and they argue. Gru decides to leave Freedonia.
The Final Showdown in Hollywood
Bratt then kidnaps the girls and gets the diamond again. Gru and Dru put their differences aside. The brothers and Lucy chase after Bratt in their father's special vehicle. The Minions, who escaped from jail, also follow them.
Bratt uses his robot's laser, powered by the diamond, to attack Hollywood. He covers the city in super-sticky chewing gum. He hopes to lift the city into outer space. Lucy saves the girls from a falling building. Bratt makes Gru and Dru crash-land in Hollywood. Bratt tries to use his laser on Gru. But Dru bravely breaks into the robot to turn it off. Gru then has a dance fight with Bratt. He takes Bratt's special keytar weapon to defeat him. Bratt floats away in a giant bubble gum bubble. The Minions pop all the gum bubbles covering the city. Gru and Dru make up, and they hug Lucy, Margo, Edith, and Agnes.
A New Beginning
Gru and Lucy get their jobs back at the AVL. Bratt is arrested, and the diamond is returned. The family celebrates together at Gru's home. The girls now truly see Lucy as their mother. Dru still wants to be a supervillain. He and most of the Minions steal Gru's rocket-powered aircraft and fly off. Gru and Lucy decide to give them a small head start before chasing after them.
