About Pierre Emmanuel

Pierre Emmanuel was a very important person in French literature. In 1968, he was chosen as the third member to join seat 4 of the Académie française. This is a famous French organization that protects the French language.

He also led several international groups. He was the president of PEN International from 1969 to 1971. This organization works to promote friendship and understanding among writers. He also led the French PEN Club from 1973 to 1976. In 1975, he became the first president of the French Institut national de l'audiovisuel, which manages French radio and television archives.

Pierre Emmanuel's second wife, Janine Loo, passed away in 2013 when she was 92. She is buried next to him in the Père-Lachaise cemetery in Paris.

His Time at the French Academy

Pierre Emmanuel was elected to the Académie française (French Academy) on April 25, 1968. He took the place of Marshal Juin. His official welcome ceremony happened on June 5, 1969.

Later, in 1975, Pierre Emmanuel decided to resign from the Academy. This happened after Félicien Marceau was elected. Pierre Emmanuel strongly disagreed with Marceau's actions during World War II. Even though he resigned, the Academy did not officially accept his resignation. They waited until he passed away to choose a new member. Professor Jean Hamburger was elected to his seat on April 18, 1985.
