Pierre de Roquefeuil-Montpeyroux was a brave French Navy officer. He served during the American War of Independence. This was a big war where the American colonies fought for their freedom from Great Britain.
Pierre de Roquefeuil-Montpeyroux was born in 1735. His family, the House of Roquefeuil-Blanquefort, was well-known. He grew up in Montpeyroux, Aveyron, where his family owned a beautiful home called the Château du Bousquet.
Pierre began his exciting journey in the French Navy very early. On September 19, 1749, when he was just 14, he joined as a Garde-Marine. This was a special role for young people learning to become naval officers. He worked hard and was promoted to lieutenant on May 1, 1763.
In 1773, he received a special honor. He was made a Knight in the Order of Saint Louis. This award recognized his excellent service and bravery.
Commander of French Ships
On April 4, 1777, Pierre was promoted to captain. This was a big step in his career! He was given command of the Oiseau, a frigate with 32 guns. A frigate is a fast warship. He served under a famous admiral named Du Chaffault.
In 1778, Pierre became a flag captain on the Saint-Esprit. This was a very large ship with 80 guns. As flag captain, he sailed with Admiral Lamotte-Picquet. Together, they fought in the Battle of Ushant. This was an important naval battle during the war.
In 1779, Pierre took command of another frigate, the Renommée. With this ship, he successfully captured two British ships. Later, he moved to an even bigger ship, the Zodiaque, which had 74 guns.
From 1781, he commanded the Dauphin Royal, another 74-gun ship. He played a part in the famous Battle of the Saintes on April 12, 1782. After the battle, an investigation was held, and Pierre was found to have acted correctly.
In 1783, he became a member of the Society of the Cincinnati. This was a special group for officers who fought in the American Revolutionary War.
Pierre retired from the navy on February 8, 1786. He held the rank of brigadier des armées navales, a high rank in the navy. He retired due to health reasons. He passed away in 1789 in Brittany.

In 1783, Pierre de Roquefeuil-Montpeyroux married Léocadie de Lagadec. They had two children together:
