The Pietà or Sexta Angustia (meaning "Sixth Anguish") is a famous sculpture made between 1616 and 1619. It was created by a Spanish artist named Gregorio Fernández. You can find this amazing artwork at the National Museum of Sculpture in Valladolid, Spain. A group called the Illustrious Penitential Brotherhood of Our Lady of Anguish asked Gregorio Fernández to make it. This sculpture is one of the most well-known of five similar artworks he made about the same sad event.
The sculpture shows the Virgin Mary holding up one hand. At her feet, the body of Jesus Christ is slumped and lifeless. This artwork was once part of a "paso". A paso is a large float with sculptures that is carried through the streets during religious processions, especially during Holy Week. The Pietà was paraded with other sculptures, including the good thief, the impenitent thief, and figures of Saint John and the Virgin Mary.
Other Pietà Sculptures by Fernández
Gregorio Fernández created several other sculptures with the same "Pietà" theme. Here are some of them:
- Pietà (1610 – 1612): This one is in the Church of Our Lady of the Mount Carmel (Spanish: Iglesia de Nuestra Señora del Carmen) in Burgos.
- Pietà (around 1620): This sculpture comes from St. Clare's Monastery in Carrión de los Condes.
- Quinta Angustia (around 1625-1627): You can see this one in the church of Saint Martín in Valladolid.
- Pietà (around 1628): This artwork is from the church of Saint Mary in La Bañeza.
Earlier Pietà Sculptures
Before Gregorio Fernández, other artists in the Castilian region of Spain also created Pietà sculptures. Famous sculptors like Juan de Juni and Francisco del Rincón made similar artworks. This shows that there was a long tradition of creating these types of sculptures in the area.
