Playing Career Highlights
Pieter Huistra started playing football as an amateur with local clubs like SC Joure. He quickly showed great talent. He made his professional debut for FC Groningen when he was just 17 years old. This happened on 5 September 1984.
After two seasons, he was loaned to BV Veendam. This team was playing in the top Dutch league, the Eredivisie. Later, coach Kees Rijvers brought him to FC Twente. Pieter became a key player for Twente. His skills even earned him a spot on the Netherlands national team. He played eight international matches for his country. Unfortunately, an injury prevented him from joining the team for the 1990 World Cup.
Time at Rangers F.C.
From 1990 to 1995, Huistra played for the Scottish club Rangers. He was the first Dutch player to join the club. During his time there, he helped Rangers win many titles. He won five League medals, three League Cup medals, and two Scottish Cup medals. His last game for Rangers was on 14 January 1995, where he scored two goals. After leaving Rangers, he moved to Japan to play for Sanfrecce Hiroshima.
Coaching Journey
Pieter Huistra started his coaching journey in 2000. He first worked as an assistant coach for the Dutch U-17 team. In 2001, he moved to Hong Kong to be an assistant coach for the Hong Kong national team for a year.
After that, he returned to FC Groningen. He worked in their youth academy and coached their U-19 team and Jong Groningen for four years. In 2005, he became an assistant coach at Vitesse Arnhem. He worked under coach Aad de Mos.
Leading Teams as Head Coach
Later, Huistra became an assistant coach at Ajax. On 24 April 2009, he was named the head coach for their reserve team, Jong Ajax. In January 2010, he returned to FC Groningen, this time as the head coach of their main team for the 2010–11 season.
His first season as head coach for Groningen was very successful. The team played an exciting, attacking style of football. They earned a record number of points and reached the play-off final for the Europa League, though they lost on penalties. In his second season, many top players were sold. The team struggled with injuries and illness, finishing 14th. Because the results were not what the club hoped for, he left the club on 10 May 2012.
On 30 May 2012, he became the head coach of De Graafschap. His goal was to help the club return to the top league. In his first season, his new team won a stage title, and he was named manager of the month. They lost in the play-offs for promotion. He stayed for a second season but left on 24 December 2013.
International and Asian Coaching Roles
On 3 December 2014, Huistra was appointed as the Technical Director for the Indonesian football association, PSSI. In 2015, he became the interim head coach for the Indonesia national team. This was for the 2018 World Cup and 2019 Asian Cup qualifiers. However, FIFA later banned Indonesia from playing due to political issues.
In January 2016, Huistra became the head coach of the Japanese club Iwaki FC. He helped this new club win several regional and national trophies in its first season.
On 31 March 2017, he became a technical advisor for the Slovak champion AS Trenčín. He then joined Pakhtakor Tashkent in Uzbekistan as an assistant coach. Together with the head coach, they helped the club improve its league position and qualify for the AFC Champions League. In 2019, the club had a strong start, reaching the Champions League group stage. He left Pakhtakor on 10 January 2022.
From February 2023 to January 2025, he coached Borneo Samarinda in Indonesia. Since February 2025, he has been the head coach of PSS Sleman.
