Aad de Mos: A Football Manager's Journey

Early Career and Ajax Success

Aad de Mos was born in The Hague, Netherlands, on March 27, 1947. He started playing football in the youth team of his local club, ADO Den Haag. His coaching career began as an assistant manager at Ajax. He worked under managers like Leo Beenhakker and Kurt Linder.

In 1982, Aad de Mos became the main manager for Ajax. He stayed in this role until 1985. During his time at Ajax, he led the team to win the Dutch national championship twice. They also won the Dutch cup once.

Winning Trophies in Belgium

After leaving Ajax, Aad de Mos moved to Belgium. He became the coach of Mechelen. This was a very successful period for him. He helped Mechelen win the Belgian national title and the Belgian cup.

In 1988, he achieved a huge victory. His Mechelen team won the European Cup Winners' Cup. They beat his old club, Ajax, 1–0 in the final match. He also led Mechelen to win the 1988 European Super Cup.

After three years with Mechelen, de Mos became the manager of Anderlecht. He reached another 1990 European Cup Winners' Cup Final with Anderlecht. However, this time his team lost to Sampdoria.

Return to the Netherlands with PSV

In 1993, Aad de Mos returned to the Netherlands. He became the new manager of PSV Eindhoven. His job was to improve an older team. In his first season, PSV finished third in the league.

His second season with PSV was not as good. Even with new players, the team did not perform well. He left PSV in 1995.

Later Career and New Challenges

After PSV, Aad de Mos managed several other clubs and a national team. Over ten years, he coached six clubs and the United Arab Emirates national team. During this time, he did not win any major trophies.

He managed teams like Werder Bremen in Germany and Standard Liège in Belgium. He also coached Sporting Gijón in Spain and Urawa Red Diamonds in Japan. He even returned to Mechelen for a second time. In 2001–02, he helped Mechelen win the Belgian Second Division. This meant they were promoted back to the top Belgian league. He also managed Al Hilal in Saudi Arabia.

Time at Vitesse

In 2006, Aad de Mos became the manager of Vitesse in the Netherlands. His first season was a bit disappointing, with Vitesse finishing 12th in the league. They played in play-off matches to try and qualify for the UEFA Intertoto Cup. They won against NAC Breda and NEC. However, they lost in the final round to Utrecht.

The 2007–08 season started very well for Vitesse. They won their first three matches, which was the best start in the club's history. But the season ended with them finishing 12th again. In April 2008, his contract with Vitesse ended.

Aad de Mos also worked as a football expert on television. He appeared on TV channels like Talpa TV and Sporza in Belgium. During the 2006 FIFA World Cup, he was an analyst for Dutch and Belgian TV. He shared his knowledge and opinions about the games.

Just one day after leaving Kavala, Aad de Mos became the new manager of Sparta Rotterdam in the Netherlands. The team was struggling and close to being moved down to a lower league. Despite his efforts, Sparta Rotterdam was relegated. Aad de Mos left the club shortly after.
