Adriaan "Aad" de Mos (born on March 27, 1947) is a Dutch retired football manager. He had a long career that lasted almost 30 years.

He coached many teams in different countries. These included his home country, the Netherlands, and also Belgium, Germany, Spain, Japan, Saudi Arabia, and Greece. He even coached the United Arab Emirates national team. Aad de Mos's biggest win was the 1987–88 European Cup Winners' Cup. He won this with the Belgian club Mechelen.

Aad de Mos's Coaching Journey

Starting His Coaching Career

Aad de Mos was born in The Hague, Netherlands. This was on March 27, 1947. As a young player, he was part of the youth team at a local club called ADO Den Haag.

He began his coaching career as an assistant. He worked with Leo Beenhakker at Ajax. He continued this role when Kurt Linder became the manager.

In 1982, Linder left Ajax. Aad de Mos then took over as the main manager. He stayed in this role until he was let go in 1985. During his time at Ajax, de Mos helped the team win the national championship twice. They also won the cup once.

Winning Big in Belgium

After leaving Ajax, de Mos moved to Belgium. He became the coach for Mechelen. There, he led the team to great success. They won the national league title and the cup.

In 1988, they won the European Cup Winners' Cup. This was a big European tournament. They beat his old club, Ajax, 1–0 in the final match. He also won the 1988 European Super Cup with Mechelen. This was another important European trophy.

After three successful years, de Mos left Mechelen. He became the manager of Anderlecht. With Anderlecht, he reached the 1990 European Cup Winners' Cup Final again. However, this time his team lost to Sampdoria.

Coaching PSV Eindhoven

In 1993, Aad de Mos returned to the Netherlands. He became the new manager of PSV Eindhoven. His job was to improve an older team. In his first season, PSV finished third in the league.

In his second season, things did not go as well. Even with new players, PSV and de Mos struggled. In September 1994, he made a strange decision. He played Erik Meijer, a forward known for heading goals, as a defender. This happened in a game against Bayer 04 Leverkusen.

Later Coaching Years

After leaving PSV, Aad de Mos coached many different teams. Over 10 years, he managed six clubs and one national team. He did not win any major trophies during this time.

He coached teams like Werder Bremen in Germany. He also managed Standard Liège in Belgium and Sporting Gijón in Spain. He went to Japan to coach Urawa Red Diamonds. He even returned to Mechelen for a second time. Later, he coached Al Hilal in Saudi Arabia. He also managed the United Arab Emirates national team.

During these years, his only big win was the Belgian Second Division with Mechelen in 2002. This win helped the club move back up to the top Belgian league.

Time at Vitesse

In 2006, de Mos became the manager of Vitesse in Arnhem, Netherlands. He joined the club at the last minute. This was because Vitesse could not get another manager, Johan Boskamp. Boskamp did not have the right Dutch papers to coach.

His first season with Vitesse was not very good. The team finished 12th in the league. They then played in special matches to try and get into the UEFA Intertoto Cup. They won against NAC Breda and NEC. But they lost in the final round to Utrecht.

The next season started well. Vitesse won their first three matches. This was the best start in the club's history. However, the season ended with Vitesse finishing 12th again. On April 28, 2008, Vitesse ended de Mos's contract right away.

Working as a TV Expert

Aad de Mos also appeared on television as a football expert. He was often on the Dutch channel Talpa TV and the Belgian channel Sporza. During the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany, he worked as an analyst. He shared his thoughts on games for the Dutch NOS and Belgian VIER channels.

Adventures in Greece: Kavala

In 2009, de Mos signed a six-month contract with Kavala, a Greek club. This happened after their previous manager was fired. Soon after, new players like Denilson, Ebi Smolarek, and Diogo Rincón joined the team.

De Mos found success quickly. A notable win was an away game against Panathinaikos in February. At that time, Panathinaikos was leading the league.

Even though he stayed for a short time, his good results and unique coaching style were noticed. A popular Dutch magazine called Voetbal International gave him a nickname. They called him "Koning van Kavala," which means "King of Kavala." On April 2, 2010, de Mos left his job as manager. It was said to be because of disagreements with the club owner.

A Challenge at Sparta Rotterdam

Just one day after leaving Kavala, on April 2, 2010, Aad de Mos became the new manager of Sparta Rotterdam. He replaced the fired boss, Frans Adelaar. Sparta Rotterdam was in a tough spot. They were close to being moved down to a lower league. They were only one point ahead of ADO Den Haag.

His time at Sparta started with little success. They had a 1–1 draw at home against Heracles Almelo. This was followed by two losses. ADO Den Haag then passed them in the standings. This meant Sparta had to play in special matches to stay in the top league.

In the first game of these matches, Sparta lost 2–1 to Eerste Divisie team Helmond Sport. But Sparta fought back in the second game, winning 2–0. This dramatic win put them into the final round. There, they played against their rivals, Excelsior. The winner would get a spot in the 2010–11 Eredivisie.

The first game against Excelsior ended 0–0. In the second game, Excelsior missed a penalty kick. Sparta then scored a goal in injury time to make it 1–0. But Excelsior scored an equalizer just seconds later. The game ended 1–1. Because of this, Sparta Rotterdam was moved down to the 2010–11 Eerste Divisie. De Mos left Sparta soon after. He said that the team's results did not meet what he and the club owners wanted.
