Life of Pietro Accolti

Early Life and Education

Pietro Accolti was born in Florence, Italy, on March 15, 1455. His father, Benedetto Accolti the Elder, was a famous lawyer. Pietro studied law at the city of Pisa. In 1481, his uncle, Francesco Accolti, who was also a master of law, helped Pietro become a teacher of church law.

Career in Rome

After 1485, Pietro moved to Rome. There, he became an auditor of the Roman Rota. This meant he was a judge who heard important legal cases for the Church. By 1500, he became the Dean, or head, of the Rota.

In 1505, Pietro was made the Bishop of Ancona. Even with this new role, he continued to work as a judge. In 1511, Pope Julius II made him a Cardinal. This was a very high position in the Church. That same year, he also took charge of the bishoprics (church areas) of Cadiz and Maillezais. Later, he also oversaw the dioceses of Arras and Ancona.

Important Church Roles

Pietro Accolti also served as an "abbreviator" under Pope Leo X. This role meant he helped prepare important official documents for the Pope. In 1520, he helped write a special document called a papal bull against Martin Luther.

After Pope Leo X died, there was a meeting to choose a new Pope. Cardinal Accolti was considered a possible candidate. In 1524, Pope Clement VII made him the Archbishop of Ravenna.

Accolti was very involved in the major political and church events of his time. A French leader named Antoine Duprat thought Accolti was one of the most educated cardinals. Pietro Accolti died in Rome on December 11, 1532. He was buried in the Santa Maria del Popolo church.
