A Life in Politics
Pietro Ingrao was born in a town called Lenola in Italy. When he was a student, he was part of a university group called GUF.
Fighting for Freedom
In 1940, Pietro Ingrao joined the Italian Communist Party (PCI). He played an important role in the resistance movement during World War II. This movement fought against the fascist government in Italy.
After the war, Ingrao became a leader within the Communist Party. He represented the "left wing" of the party, which meant he had strong ideas about how society should be organized. Sometimes, he had different opinions from other leaders, like Giorgio Amendola.
A Long Career in Parliament
Pietro Ingrao was a member of the Italian Parliament for a very long time, from 1950 to 1992. That's over 40 years!
From 1947 to 1957, he was the main editor of the party's newspaper, L'Unità.
In 1976, he made history by becoming the first Communist to be elected as the President of the Italian Chamber of Deputies. This is a very important job, similar to being the speaker of a parliament. He held this position until 1979.
Changes in the Party
Later, when the Communist Party decided to change its name and direction, Pietro Ingrao disagreed with some of these changes. However, he eventually joined the new party, the Democratic Party of the Left (PDS). He later left this group and joined the Communist Refoundation Party, which was closer to the original ideas of the old Communist Party.
Writer and Thinker
Besides being a politician, Pietro Ingrao also wrote many poems and political essays. One of his most important books is Appuntamenti di fine secolo (which means "Rendez-vous at the end of the century"), published in 1995. He wrote this book with Rossana Rossanda.
Pietro Ingrao was married to Laura Lombardo Radice, who passed away in 2003. He lived to be 100 years old, passing away on September 27, 2015.
