Early Life and Education
Rossana Rossanda was born in Pula, a city that was part of Italy at the time. She later moved to Milan to study. There, she was a student of a famous thinker named Antonio Banfi.
Joining the Resistance Movement
When she was very young, Rossana joined the Italian resistance. This group fought against the bad government during World War II. After the war ended, she became a member of the Italian Communist Party (PCI).
Political Career and Journalism
After a short time in the party, a leader named Palmiro Togliatti put her in charge of culture. This was a big role for someone so young. In 1963, she was chosen to be a member of the Italian Chamber of Deputies. This is like being a member of parliament in other countries.
Supporting Student Movements
In 1968, Rossana wrote a short book called L'anno degli studenti, which means "The Year of the Students." In this book, she showed her support for young people who were protesting and asking for changes.
Founding il manifesto
Rossana was part of a group within the Italian Communist Party that disagreed with the Soviet Union. The Soviet Union was a very powerful communist country at the time. Because of her different views, she, along with Luigi Pintor, Valentino Parlato, and Lucio Magri, started a new political group and a newspaper called il manifesto.
This decision led to her being removed from the Italian Communist Party. This happened after a big meeting of the party in Bologna.
Later Political Activities
In the 1972 elections, Il Manifesto party did not get many votes. Because of this, it joined with another group called the Proletarian Unity Party. They formed a new party called the Proletarian Unity Party for Communism.
Later, Rossana stopped being active in party politics. However, she continued to be the director of the il manifesto newspaper.
Later Years and Legacy
Rossana Rossanda passed away on September 20, 2020, when she was 96 years old. She is remembered for her strong beliefs and her work as a journalist and politician.
