Pietro Martorana (1705–1759) was an Italian painter. He came from a family of artists in Palermo, a city in Sicily. Pietro was a very important artist who painted in the late Baroque style.
What are Frescos?
Pietro Martorana was famous for painting frescos. A fresco is a special type of wall painting. Artists paint on wet plaster, which is a material used to cover walls. As the plaster dries, the paint becomes a permanent part of the wall. This makes frescos very long-lasting.
Pietro's Artworks
Most of Martorana's artworks are frescos. He painted many beautiful scenes in churches in Palermo. Some of these churches include Santa Rosalia, St. Chiara, and St. Carlo.
He also worked with another artist named Olivio Sozzi. Together, they decorated the palace of Michele Gravina Branciforte. This was a very important building in Palermo. Pietro Martorana's work helped make these places look amazing.
