The Pigmy Pouter is a special type of pigeon. It is known as a "fancy pigeon" because people have carefully bred them for many years. This process is called selective breeding.
Like all domesticated pigeons, Pigmy Pouters come from the rock pigeon (Columba livia). These wild pigeons are found all over the world.
What Makes Pigmy Pouters Unique?
The Pigmy Pouter is a smaller version of another pigeon called the English Pouter. This is why it has "pigmy" in its name, which means very small.
Pouter pigeons are famous for their ability to inflate their crop. The crop is a part of their throat. When they inflate it, it looks like a large balloon. This makes them look very impressive.
How Pigmy Pouters Were Developed
Many years ago, people started to breed pigeons to create new types. This is called selective breeding. They would choose pigeons with certain traits. Then they would breed them together. This helped to make those traits stronger in the next generation.
A famous British poultry breeder named Sir John Sebright is thought to have first bred the Pigmy Pouter. Sir John Sebright was a very important person in animal breeding. He also created the Sebright Bantam chicken.
