Pilar Nouvilas (born March 6, 1854, in Castelló d'Empúries, died 1938 in Barcelona) was a Spanish painter from Catalonia. She was known for her still life paintings, portraits, and religious art.
Early Life and Training
Pilar Nouvilas i Garrigolas was born in a town called Castelló d'Empúries. Her family, the Nouvilas, were wealthy landowners in the Empordà region.
Because her family was well-off, Pilar had the chance to travel around Europe. During these trips, she trained in painting. She mostly learned by copying famous artworks she saw in museums.
Painting Career
Between 1877 and 1879, Pilar Nouvilas showed her paintings in at least four art shows. Three of these were at the Girona Art Exhibition, and one was in Figueres.
In 1877, she showed a portrait and a landscape painting in Girona. In 1878 and 1879, she presented two paintings called Sant Francesc de Paula and Bodegó (which means "Still Life").
Pilar was different from many other artists because she did not want to sell the paintings she showed. At that time, very few women artists exhibited their work. For example, in the 1878 exhibition, there were 55 painters, but only three were women. Pilar was one of them.
Pilar painted many different subjects. She created still life paintings (pictures of objects like fruit or flowers), portraits of people she knew, and even self-portraits (pictures of herself). She also painted landscapes and religious scenes. She mostly used oil paints and watercolors. People often praised her for her use of color and light in her artworks.
Personal Life
In 1882, Pilar Nouvilas married Eduard de Balle i de Rubinat. He was the fifth Marquis of Vallgornera. Eduard inherited a large estate, which included properties in Olot, El Rourell, and Tarragona.
Pilar and Eduard had two children. Their son was named Eduard de Balle. Their daughter later married a diplomat and moved to Mexico. After she got married, Pilar Nouvilas did not show her paintings in public exhibitions anymore.
