About Pimelea ammocharis
Pimelea ammocharis is a small, upright bush. It usually grows between 0.2 and 1.8 meters tall. When new parts of the plant grow, their stems are very hairy.
Leaves and Flowers
The leaves of this plant grow in a special way. They are arranged one after another along the stem. Each leaf has a short stalk. The leaves are narrow and can be shaped like an egg or a line. They are usually between 4 and 17 millimeters long. They are also about 1 to 5 millimeters wide. The leaves have a light, silvery-green color.
The flowers of Pimelea ammocharis grow in tight groups. These groups are called inflorescences. They can hang down or stand straight up. Each flower is shaped like a tube and is 5.5 to 11 millimeters long. The flowers can be white, deep yellow, or orange. The inside of the flowers is smooth. However, the outside is very hairy. The small leaf-like parts under the flower, called sepals, are 1.5 to 4 millimeters long.
Male and Female Flowers
Some flowers are male. These flowers are mostly covered in even hairs. Other flowers are female or have both male and female parts. These flowers have longer hairs near their base. These hairs are about 7 to 9 millimeters long. The hairs become much shorter towards the top of the flower. You can see this plant flowering from March to October.
Naming the Plant
The plant Pimelea ammocharis was first officially described in 1857. A famous botanist named Ferdinand von Mueller gave it its name. He published his description in a science journal. The second part of the plant's name, ammocharis, has a special meaning. It comes from two old Greek words. Ammos means "sand," and charis means "grace." So, the name means "sand grace" or "grace of the sand."
