Pimlico, Dublin facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Pimlico is a cool part of Dublin, Ireland. It's in the southern part of the city, in an area called Dublin 8. You can find it between Thomas Court and Ardee Street, and there are even some special homes called Pimlico Cottages at one end. It's also super close to the famous Guinness Brewery!

Long ago, Pimlico was a busy place where many families lived and worked as weavers. These were people who made cloth. Many of them had moved to Dublin from France, often after living in London for a while.

What's in a Name?

The name Pimlico is pretty interesting! It probably first came from America, but then it was used for a place in London, England. Dublin's Pimlico then borrowed the name from the London area.

We know this because the name "Pimlico" was first written down in Dublin way back in 1663. It appeared in official letters sent by important people like the Earl of Orrery to the Duke of Ormonde.

A Mix of Cultures

Because many French Huguenots (who were Protestants) and Jewish people moved to the area, Pimlico became a lively place with lots of different cultures and businesses. This mix of people and activities might be why some streets in the area have unique names, like Fumbally Lane and Tripoli!

Pimlico in Music

Pimlico has even made its way into songs!

  • One old song from the 1800s is called The Banks of Pimlico. It was a popular music hall song back then.
  • Another famous song connected to Pimlico is Dublin in the Rare Old Times by Pete St John. Many artists, like the Dublin City Ramblers, The Dubliners, and Flogging Molly, have recorded this song. It tells the story of a character named Sean Dempsey, who was "born hard and late in Pimlico, in a house that ceased to be." This shows how Pimlico is a special part of Dublin's history and stories.
