The Pioneer Women's Memorial is a special statue located in the Jessie Street Gardens in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. This memorial was created to celebrate and remember the important part women played in settling and building up Australia.

About the Pioneer Women's Memorial

This memorial was requested by the Women's Pioneer Society of Australasia. They wanted to honor women as part of Australia's bicentenary celebrations in 1988. A bicentenary is a 200-year anniversary.

The sculptor Alex Koloszy designed and built the memorial. It is a large statue made of bronze.

What the Statue Looks Like

The sculpture shows a woman carrying a baby in her left arm. She is also pulling a young child alongside her on her right side. The statue stands tall at 3.5 meters. This height is about the same as a single-story house.

Why and When it was Built

The memorial was officially shown to the public on November 19, 1988. Lady Rowland unveiled it. She was the wife of the Governor of New South Wales at that time. The Governor is like the Queen's representative in the state.

Honoring Pioneer Women

The Pioneer Women's Memorial helps us remember the hard work and strength of women who helped settle Australia. These women faced many challenges. They helped build communities, raise families, and contribute to the new country. The memorial is a way to say thank you for their efforts.
