About Jessie Street Gardens
Jessie Street Gardens is a peaceful green space right in the middle of Sydney's city center. It's a great spot to relax and enjoy nature. The park is easy to find, especially if you're visiting Circular Quay, which is a popular place for ferries and sightseeing.
Who Was Jessie Street?
The park is named after Jessie Street, a truly amazing Australian woman. She was a strong advocate for women's rights and equality. This means she worked hard to make sure women had the same opportunities and rights as men. Naming the park after her helps us remember her important work and contributions to society.
How the Park Was Created
The Jessie Street Gardens wasn't always a park. In 1989, the land was empty after an old building was taken down. At first, people thought about calling it Gateway Park. But when it was time to give it an official name, two ideas came up: naming it after Jessie Street or Mary Reibey, another important historical figure.
The Geographical Names Board of New South Wales decided that the park should be named after Jessie Street. So, in 1990, it officially became the Jessie Street Gardens.
The park was officially opened on December 7, 1990. Lady Candy Bingham, whose husband was the Lord Mayor of Sydney (the city's main leader) at the time, did the honors. Jessie Street's son, Sir Laurence Street, was also there for the special day.
Special Memorials in the Park
Inside the Jessie Street Gardens, you'll find two important memorials. A memorial is like a special monument that helps us remember people or events.
- The Pioneer Women's Memorial honors the brave women who helped build Australia from its early days.
- The NSW Ex-Servicewomen’s Memorial remembers the women from New South Wales who served in the armed forces.
These memorials make the park not just a place for fun, but also a place for history and remembrance.
