Piotr Gamrat (born 1487 – died August 27, 1545) was a very important leader in the Catholic Church in Poland. He held the title of Archbishop of Gniezno and was also the Primate of Poland. This meant he was the highest-ranking Catholic bishop in the country. His family used the Sulima coat of arms.

The Life of Piotr Gamrat

Piotr Gamrat was born in 1487 in a place called Samoklęski, which was near Jasło in Poland. He grew up to become a powerful figure in both the church and the government.

Early Career and Rise to Power

When he was younger, Piotr Gamrat worked as a royal secretary for Sigismund I the Old, who was the King of Poland at the time. A royal secretary was like a top assistant to the king, helping with important letters and decisions.

Gamrat quickly moved up in the church. He became a bishop in several different cities:

  • In 1531, he became the bishop of Kamieniec.
  • Then, in 1535, he became the bishop of Przemyśl.
  • By 1538, he was the bishop of Kraków.
  • Finally, in 1541, he also became the Archbishop of Gniezno. This was a very high position.

From 1540 to 1545, a famous historian named Marcin Kromer worked as Gamrat's secretary.

His Role in the Church

Piotr Gamrat was very active in the Catholic Church. He worked hard to stop the spread of the Protestant Reformation. This was a time when many people were leaving the Catholic Church to start new Christian groups. Gamrat wanted to keep people in the Catholic faith.

He also helped to improve religious education in Poland. He made changes to how sermons (religious talks) were given. He also reformed how local Catholic churches were managed.

Beyond the Church

Even though he was a church leader, Piotr Gamrat also took part in the political life of Poland. This means he was involved in how the country was run. He was a powerful person who influenced many decisions in both the church and the government. He passed away on August 27, 1545, in Łowicz.
