Pirate Diary: The Journal of Jake Carpenter is an exciting book that tells the story of pirate life. It's written like the journal of a young cabin boy named Jake Carpenter. The book was created by Richard Platt and has amazing pictures by Chris Riddell. It was published by Walker Books in 2001. This book is part of a series of "Diary" books by Richard Platt.
Pirate Diary won some cool awards! It received the Kate Greenaway Medal for its fantastic illustrations by Chris Riddell. This award is given to the best-illustrated children's book published in the UK. It also won the Blue Peter Book Award for being the "Best Book with Facts." Plus, it was a runner-up for the Nestlé Smarties Book Prize in the 6–8 age group.
The Greenaway Medal press release called Pirate Diary an "exciting information book for children from 8 to 14." It was the first "information book" to win the illustration Medal since 1975. Chris Riddell, the illustrator, said that when he worked with author Richard Platt, they had to make sure everything was historically accurate. This meant no parrots, eye-patches, or wooden legs for the pirates! But don't worry, there were still plenty of weapons and exciting action.
