Discover the Pittsburgh Glass Center
The Pittsburgh Glass Center is a special spot for studio glass art. This means art made from glass in a workshop or studio, often by individual artists. It's a place where you can see beautiful glass artwork. You can also learn how to make it yourself. The center helps teach people about glass art and supports artists who create it.
How It Started
The idea for the Pittsburgh Glass Center began way back in 1991. A person named David Stephens talked with two glass artists, Ron Desmett and Kathleen Mulcahy. They thought it would be great to have a special place for glass art.
At first, they planned to build it in a different town. But by 1999, the plans changed. Everyone decided Pittsburgh would be the best home for the center. The Pittsburgh Glass Center officially opened its doors in 2001.
A Green Building
The building where the Pittsburgh Glass Center is located is very special. It is LEED-certified. This means it was built in a way that is good for the environment. It uses less energy and water. This green building has also helped the area around it grow. New homes, like the Glass Lofts, have been built nearby.
Helping Artists Learn
The Glass Center is always growing. In 2012, it bought some houses next to its main building. These houses are used as homes for students and visiting artists. This way, artists who come to teach or learn have a place to stay. These visiting artists are called artists-in-residence.
By 2012, the center had a budget of about $1 million. It also had ten full-time employees working there. This shows how much the center has grown and how many people it helps.
