Have you ever heard of a plain loaf? It's a special kind of bread, mostly found in Scotland and Ireland. In Scotland, people sometimes call a slice of it plain breid.
What Makes a Plain Loaf Unique?
A plain loaf looks a bit different from other breads. It has a dark, crispy crust on its top and bottom. But here's the cool part: it has no crust on its sides!
How is it Made?
This happens because plain loaves are baked in a very special way. Many unbaked loaves are placed very close together in a big batch. They actually touch and stick to each other while baking. After they are fully baked, the loaves are carefully torn apart. This is why the sides don't get a crust. Because of this baking method, it's sometimes called a batch loaf.
Where Does it Come From?
The plain loaf is a traditional bread from Scotland and Ireland. Long ago, this type of loaf was much more common. It was seen more often than the "pan loaves" that are popular today.
