A Look Back: The History of the Bullring
Early Days of Bullfighting in Manizales
Around 1897, a small circus was built in Manizales for the city's very first bullfighting event. Over time, more circuses were created for these events. One notable bullring, called Plaza de toros El Soldado, was built very quickly in just 15 days. It opened on May 14, 1944.
Building the Current Plaza de Toros
On September 27, 1945, a group of people came together to form the "Plaza de Toros de Manizales" society. They wanted to build a new, permanent bullring. Many important people were part of this group, including José Restrepo Restrepo and Pedro Jaramillo. Over the years, this society transferred ownership of the bullring to the Caldas branch of the Red Cross, which still owns it today.
The construction company "Robledo y Borrero" finished building the Plaza de Toros de Manizales on December 23, 1951. The very first bullfight in the new building happened on this day. The bullring was designed to hold twelve thousand people, but it first opened with space for seven thousand.
Famous Visitors and Events
Between 1951 and 1955, the bullring hosted many bullfighting events and festivals. Famous people visited, including the Mexican comedian Mario Moreno, known as Cantinflas. Other performers like Rubén Escobar and Félix Rodríguez Antón also appeared.
