History of Pleasant Peak
Pleasant Peak holds a special place in the history of the Falkland Islands. During the 1982 conflict, the area around the peak saw some important events.
Incidents at Pleasant Peak
In 1982, a British Army Gazelle helicopter was accidentally shot down near Pleasant Peak by a British warship, HMS Cardiff. This sad event resulted in the loss of four lives. A memorial now stands on the peak to remember those who died.
Building Mount Pleasant Complex
After the conflict, a major construction project began near Pleasant Peak. This was to build the RAF Mount Pleasant complex, a large military air base. To help with this huge task, a quarry was opened on the lower slopes of Pleasant Peak. This quarry provided strong rock, called quartzite, which was essential for building the foundations of the base and its runways.
