Point Belches facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Point Belches is a small piece of land that sticks out into the Swan River in Western Australia. It's located on the south side of the river, about 250 meters east of a narrow part of the river called The Narrows. This area is part of Perth Water. The land itself is part of the South Perth Esplanade, and the water nearby is a popular spot for water skiing.

What is Point Belches?

Point Belches is a small piece of land that extends into the Swan River. It is located in Perth Water, a part of the Swan River that flows through the city of Perth. This area is known for its beautiful views and is a popular spot for various water activities.

Who Found Point Belches?

Captain James Stirling found Point Belches during his trip to the Swan River in 1827. He named it after Peter Belches. Peter Belches was part of Stirling's exploration team and was a Third Lieutenant on Stirling's ship, the HMS Success.

How the Name Changed Over Time

Today, "Point Belches" usually means a small spot on the eastern side of a larger piece of land. However, Captain Stirling likely meant the name to cover the whole area. For example, the historic Old Mill was once said to be on Point Belches. Old maps also show Point Belches in a different spot than where it is marked today. It used to be shown north of Miller's Pool, not east of it.

A Stop for Early Ferries

In the past, Point Belches was an important stopping point for early ferries. These ferries traveled across Perth Water, helping people get around the area.

What is Mill Point?

The larger piece of land that Point Belches is part of is now usually called Mill Point. But just like Point Belches, "Mill Point" also strictly refers to a smaller spot, this time on the western side of the peninsula. So, both names can be a bit confusing!
