Point of view facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

A point of view, also called a viewpoint or POV, is how someone sees or thinks about something. It's like looking at the world through your own unique set of eyes. Everyone has their own point of view, which is shaped by their experiences, beliefs, and feelings.

What is a Point of View?

A point of view is simply a perspective on a topic. Imagine you and a friend are looking at the same painting. You might see different things or have different feelings about it. Your thoughts and feelings about the painting make up your point of view.

Point of View in Stories

In stories, the point of view is about who is telling the story. It's the experience of the narrator. This means we see the story through their eyes.

There are different ways a story can be told:

  • First-person point of view: The narrator is a character in the story. They use words like "I" and "me." You learn about the story directly from their thoughts and feelings.
  • Third-person point of view: The narrator is outside the story. They use words like "he," "she," and "they." This narrator can sometimes know what all characters are thinking (omniscient) or only what one character is thinking.

Understanding the point of view helps you know whose thoughts and feelings are being shared. It changes how you understand the events and characters in a book or movie.
