Experience facts for kids
Experience is what you learn by doing something or seeing it happen. It's like learning through action! For example, if you want to learn to play chess, you have to actually play games. You learn from your actions and any mistakes you make. This is often much more helpful than just reading about how to play.
Some religious groups and teaching methods believe that learning by experiencing things is very important.
Different Kinds of Experience
Experience can be divided into different types based on how we learn.
Type | What it means |
---|---|
Body | Learning through physical actions, like riding a bicycle. |
Mind | Learning through thinking, like playing chess or solving a puzzle. |
Heart | Learning from your emotions, like understanding how it feels to be in love. |
Soul | Learning through spiritual or religious feelings, like during prayer. |
When you do something yourself or see it happen with your own eyes, that's called first-hand experience. For example, if you visit a zoo, you get first-hand experience of seeing the animals.
When someone tells you about their experience, you get second-hand experience. If your friend tells you about their trip to the zoo, you learn about it second-hand.
Sometimes, you can feel like you're part of an experience even if you're not actually there. This is called a "vicarious experience". For example, watching a movie about a brave hero can make you feel excited, as if you were the hero.
A religious experience is a special spiritual event that someone feels or sees. Holy books like the Bible talk about visions or dreams where people like Moses, Daniel, or Jesus felt close to God. Some people called mystics also describe these kinds of events.
Wise Sayings About Experience
Many old sayings, called proverbs, talk about how important experience is.
- "Only the foolish learn from experience — the wise learn from the experience of others." This Romanian proverb means that smart people learn from the mistakes other people make, so they don't have to make the same mistakes themselves.
- "Experience keeps a dear school, but fools will learn in no other." This saying by Benjamin Franklin means that learning from your own mistakes can be hard and costly. But some people, called "fools" in this saying, will only learn this way. They won't learn from books, teachers, or by listening to others.
