Pokki was a free computer program made by SweetLabs, Inc. It worked like an extra part for Windows Shell, which is the main way you interact with your computer. Pokki changed the Start menu on computers to look more like the older Start menus before Windows 8. It also added cool features like search, favorite apps, and popular programs.
Some computer security programs, like Sophos AV, identified Pokki as software that might not be wanted on your computer.
How Pokki Started
Pokki first came out as a test version in June 2011. It was built using a special framework called Chromium. This allowed developers to create desktop apps using common web languages. These languages include HTML5, CSS3, and JavaScript.
The Pokki Store
In April 2012, Pokki launched its own online shop called the Pokki Store. This was a place where people could find and download desktop apps. Many of these apps were for social networking or playing games online. Users could look through different categories, search for apps, and download them easily. Developers could submit their apps to the Pokki Store through the Pokki Developer Center.
Growing and Changing
By August 2012, Pokki was no longer a test version. It had grown to have 1 million users each month. At this time, Pokki also released the Pokki Menu. This was a special launcher that helped users find, manage, and discover new apps. It also had a notification center to show real-time updates from their apps.
In October 2012, a version of Pokki was released for Windows 8. This was important because Windows 8 had removed the traditional Start menu. Pokki helped bring back a similar menu for Windows 8 users. By January 2013, about 1.5 million people were using Pokki.
