Poldine Demoski Carlo (December 5, 1920 – May 9, 2018) was an important American author. She was also a respected elder of the Koyukon people, who are a Native Alaskan group.

Poldine Carlo was born on December 5, 1920, in a place called Nulato, which was then part of the Territory of Alaska. She grew up learning about her Koyukon heritage and traditions.

Family Life

In 1940, Poldine married William "Bill" Carlo. They had a large family with eight children: five sons named William Jr., Kenny, Walter, Glenn, and Stewart, and three daughters named Dorothy, Lucy, and Kathleen. Poldine spent much of her life living in Fairbanks, Alaska.

A Voice for Her Community

Poldine Carlo was a strong leader and advocate for her people. She helped start the Fairbanks Native Association (FNA). This group works to support and improve the lives of Native people in the Fairbanks area.

She also served on the board of the Alaska Bicentennial Commission (ABC). This commission helped celebrate 200 years of American history in Alaska. Poldine was also a consultant for the Tanana Chiefs Conference (TCC). This organization helps many different Native Alaskan communities in the Interior of Alaska.

Her Book: Nulato

Poldine Carlo was a talented writer. She wrote a book called Nulato: An Indian Life on the Yukon. This book shares her experiences and stories about life as a Native person along the Yukon River. She dedicated her book to her son, Stewart.

Lasting Legacy

Poldine Carlo's contributions to her community and her writing were highly valued. A building in downtown Fairbanks, owned by the Fairbanks Native Association, was named the Poldine Carlo Building in her honor. This shows how much she was respected and remembered.
