Polly Plummer is a main character from C. S. Lewis's famous fantasy book series, The Chronicles of Narnia. She appears in two of the seven books: The Magician's Nephew and The Last Battle. Polly is known for her sensible nature and her strong friendship with Digory Kirke.

Polly's Adventures in Narnia

Meeting Digory and the Magic Rings

Polly is first introduced in The Magician's Nephew. This book was published sixth, but it tells the very first story in the Narnia timeline. In the year 1900, Polly is an 11-year-old girl living in London, England. She lives next door to Digory Kirke's aunt, where Digory is staying because his mother is very ill.

Polly and Digory quickly become good friends. They often play in Polly's attic, which has a secret passage. This passage connects to the attics of all the houses on their street. Polly uses this secret space as her hideout, where she drinks ginger beer and writes her own private story.

Journey to Other Worlds

One day, while exploring the attic passage, Polly and Digory accidentally find themselves in the study of Digory's Uncle Andrew. Uncle Andrew tricks Polly into touching a yellow ring, which makes her disappear! He believes she has gone to another world. Uncle Andrew then forces Digory to follow Polly with another ring to bring her back.

Digory follows Polly and finds her in a strange, quiet place called the Wood between the Worlds. This Wood is filled with many pools, and each pool leads to a different world. Polly and Digory soon realize that Uncle Andrew doesn't understand how these rings truly work. He's just playing with magic without knowing the real dangers.

Discovering Charn and the White Witch

Polly and Digory decide to explore one of the pools. It takes them to the ruined city of Charn, a dead world with a dying sun. Against Polly's careful advice, Digory rings a magic bell. This action accidentally wakes up Jadis, who will later become the evil White Witch.

Jadis follows the children back through the Wood between the Worlds and into London. After a lot of trouble, Polly helps Digory take Jadis back to the Wood. They try to send her back to Charn, but instead, the pool they choose takes them to a brand new world: Narnia.

Witnessing Narnia's Creation

In Narnia, Polly and Digory witness the world being created by Aslan, a powerful lion. They see the first dawn and the birth of life through Aslan's singing. Polly, Digory, a cab driver, and his horse (who were brought along by mistake) are the only ones not scared by Aslan. Jadis and Uncle Andrew are terrified.

After Narnia is created, Polly, Digory, and the cab driver's horse (who is now a flying, talking horse named Fledge) fly to a special garden. They need to get a magical apple from this garden. This apple, when planted, grows into a tree that protects the young land of Narnia. Aslan gives Digory an apple from this new tree to help heal his sick mother.

Polly and Digory then return to England. Digory's mother gets better, and he buries the apple core and the magic rings.

Polly's Friendship with Digory

Digory later moves to a large country house. Polly spends almost every holiday there, and they remain very close friends throughout their lives. Polly's calm and caring nature helps balance Digory's adventurous and sometimes impulsive personality. She provides emotional support and helps him make good choices. Both Polly and Digory learn important lessons from their time in Narnia and their meeting with Aslan. This experience forms the basis of their strong, lifelong friendship.

Polly as an Adult

In The Last Battle, which is the final book in the series, Polly is an adult of 60 years old. She is still in touch with the other "friends of Narnia" from Britain. She is with them when Narnia's King Tirian appears and asks for their help. Polly is shown as a cheerful, kind, and wise adult. The younger children even call her "Aunt Polly."

Later, Polly is involved in a railway accident and is transported to Aslan's country, along with the other friends of Narnia. Once she arrives in Narnia, she and Digory become young again. They are both dressed like royalty and are called Lady Polly and Lord Digory.
