Pollyanna Grows Up is a children's novel written by Eleanor H. Porter in 1915. It's the first follow-up to her very popular book, Pollyanna (1913). Interestingly, this is the only sequel that Porter herself wrote. All the other books in the Pollyanna series were written by different authors.
Pollyanna Grows Up
This book continues the adventures of Pollyanna, a girl known for playing the "glad game." The "glad game" is about finding something to be glad about in every situation, no matter how difficult.
What's the Story About?
The story begins with Pollyanna, who has now recovered from a serious injury. She moves to a new town and starts teaching everyone there how to play her famous "glad game." One of the people she meets is Mrs. Carew, a very sad and bitter woman. Mrs. Carew has been heartbroken ever since her sister's son, Jamie, went missing.
As Pollyanna spreads her positive outlook, she makes new friends. These include Sadie and a boy named Jamie. This Jamie is a very smart writer, but he uses a wheelchair and crutches because his legs are weak.
Several years later, Pollyanna is now twenty years old. She and her aunt face tough times after Dr. Chilton passes away. To earn money, Pollyanna and her aunt decide to let some of Pollyanna's friends from six years earlier stay with them as boarders. However, many secrets start to come out. These secrets lead to misunderstandings and big discoveries. For example, they learn what happened to Pollyanna's old childhood friend, Jimmy Bean-Pendleton, after his father died.
