Early Life and Moving to England
Polydore de Keyser was born on December 13, 1832. His hometown was Dendermonde, a city in Belgium. When he was still young, he moved to England. This was before the year 1849. In 1853, he became a British citizen. This means he officially became a citizen of England.
Building a Grand Hotel
De Keyser was a very successful businessman. He started a large hotel called the Royal Hotel. It had about 400 rooms! Later, this hotel was known as the De Keyser's Royal Hotel. He managed the hotel himself for many years. It was open from 1856 until 1887. The hotel was built where an old building, Bridewell Palace, used to be. The hotel was eventually taken down in 1929. A new building, Unilever House, stands there now.
A Man of Many Talents
Polydore de Keyser was involved in many parts of London life. He belonged to several different City companies. These were like old-fashioned trade groups or clubs. In October 1887, Polydore de Keyser made history. He was elected as the Lord Mayor of London. He was the first Roman Catholic to hold this position since the Reformation. The Reformation was a big religious change that happened centuries before. This made his election very special. He served as Lord Mayor for one year, until November 1888.
Being Knighted
After his time as Lord Mayor, Polydore de Keyser received a great honor. He was made a knight on December 4, 1888. This meant he could use the title "Sir" before his name. He also visited his home country, Belgium, in 1888. While there, he was celebrated with special music. A Belgian composer named Peter Benoit wrote two songs for him.
The De Keyser's Royal Hotel
The De Keyser's Royal Hotel was very popular. It had about 400 rooms. Many people from other countries stayed there. Guests came from America, the Netherlands, France, and Belgium. Polydore de Keyser himself could speak six different languages! This helped him connect with his international guests. The hotel was also used for big parties and dinners.
