Diplomatic Missions for King Henry III
Between 1575 and 1588, Bellièvre took on more than a dozen special missions for King Henry III. These were called diplomatic missions. A diplomat is someone who represents their country and tries to solve problems or make agreements with other countries or groups.
Sometimes, Bellièvre talked with leaders from other countries, like Elizabeth I of England. More often, he negotiated with groups within France. These groups included the Huguenots, who were French Protestants led by Henry of Navarre. He also dealt with the Catholic League, a powerful Catholic group. Another person he negotiated with was Francis, Duke of Anjou, and his friends in the Low Countries (modern-day Netherlands and Belgium).
Bellièvre wrote many letters to King Henry III about these missions. He also talked about them with other government officials. Sometimes, he quietly shared his worries about the king's choices with his colleagues. He was more careful when speaking directly to the king.
Trying to Save Mary, Queen of Scots
