Ponte Morandi facts for kids
The Ponte Morandi (which means Morandi Bridge in English) was a very important bridge in Genoa, Italy. It was also known as the Polcevera viaduct. This bridge was part of the A10 motorway and helped connect Italy to France.
Building the Bridge
The Ponte Morandi was built between 1963 and 1967. It was officially opened on September 4, 1967. For many years, it was a key part of the road network in Genoa.
The Bridge Collapse
On August 14, 2018, a large section of the Ponte Morandi suddenly collapsed. This was a very sad event. Forty-three people lost their lives.
People who saw it happen said that the bridge was hit by lightning right before it fell. When the bridge collapsed, between 30 and 35 cars and three trucks fell from it.
