A Pope is the leader of the Catholic Church. This important role has existed for a very long time, and many different people have served as Pope throughout history. Sometimes, a Pope chooses a new name when they begin their service. The name "John" has been a very popular choice for Popes over the centuries.

When someone says "Pope John," they might be talking about one of many different Popes who used that name. It's a bit like saying "King George" – there have been several kings with that name!

Popes Named John Through History

Over many centuries, a number of Popes have chosen the name John. Each of them led the Catholic Church during their time, dealing with the challenges and changes of their era.

Pope John XXIII

One of the most well-known Popes named John in recent times was Pope John XXIII (1958–1963). He was born Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli. He is remembered for being a very kind and friendly leader, often called "Good Pope John."

A Big Meeting for Change

Pope John XXIII called a very important meeting called the Second Vatican Council. Pope John Paul I (1978) had a very short time as Pope, only 33 days! He was known as "The Smiling Pope" because he always seemed to have a warm smile. People loved his simple and friendly way of speaking.

Pope John Paul II (1978–2005) served for a very long time, over 26 years! He was the first Polish Pope and traveled to more countries than any other Pope in history. He met with millions of people around the world, spreading messages of peace and faith.

What About Other Popes John?

Many other Popes throughout history were also named John, from Pope John I in the 6th century to Pope John XIX in the 11th century. Each of them played a part in the long history of the Catholic Church.

What is an Antipope?

Sometimes, in history, there were people who claimed to be the Pope but were not officially recognized by the Church. These people are called "Antipopes." For example, there was an Antipope John VIII and an Antipope John XVI. They were not considered the true Popes by the main Church leaders.
