A Look Back: The College's History
How It Began
The Port Gibson Female College opened in 1843. It was a place where girls could get a good education, which was very important at that time.
Changes Over Time
In 1869, the college was given to the Methodist Episcopal Church, South. This meant the church helped run the school. What's interesting is that this college stayed open even during the Civil War. Many other schools in Mississippi had to close during that difficult time.
The End of an Era
The college continued to teach students for many years. However, it eventually closed down in 1908. Even though the school is gone, one of its original buildings is still used today. It now serves as the city hall for Port Gibson!
