This river winds its way through a few different towns. These include Saint-Damase-de-L'Islet, Sainte-Louise, and Saint-Jean-Port-Joli. All these places are in the L'Islet Regional County Municipality. This area is part of the Chaudière-Appalaches region in Quebec.

Where Does the Port Joli River Start and Go?

The Port Joli River begins in Saint-Damase-de-L'Islet. It starts from small streams found in farming areas. This starting point is about 9.7 kilometers (6 miles) southeast of the St. Lawrence River. It is also about 12.1 kilometers (7.5 miles) east of Saint-Jean-Port-Joli.

The river flows for about 18.6 kilometers (11.6 miles) in total. Here is how its journey is divided:

  • It flows about 2.0 kilometers (1.2 miles) southwest in Saint-Damase-de-L'Islet. This takes it to the border of Sainte-Louise.
  • Next, it travels about 1.3 kilometers (0.8 miles) west in Sainte-Louise. It then reaches the border of Saint-Jean-Port-Joli.
  • The river continues southwest for about 8.4 kilometers (5.2 miles). It passes by Route 204.
  • Then, it flows southwest for another 1.3 kilometers (0.8 miles). Here it goes under Highway 20.
  • Finally, it flows about 5.6 kilometers (3.5 miles) southwest until it meets the St. Lawrence River.

The Port Joli River ends its journey by flowing into the middle St. Lawrence estuary. This happens in a place called Anse Port Joli. This meeting point is about 3.4 kilometers (2.1 miles) northeast of L'Islet-sur-Mer. It is also about 4.6 kilometers (2.9 miles) southwest of Saint-Jean-Port-Joli.
