The Port Washington Narrows is a narrow waterway, like a river, that connects larger bodies of water. It's located in Bremerton, Washington, in the United States. This important channel sits between downtown Bremerton and the Manette Peninsula.

What is the Port Washington Narrows?

The Port Washington Narrows is a special type of waterway called a tidal strait. This means it's a narrow passage of water that connects two larger areas of water, and its currents are strongly affected by the ocean's tides.

Where is the Narrows Located?

The Narrows has two main entrances. On its northwest side, you'll find Rocky Point on the west. On the southeast side, Point Turner is on the west, and Point Herron is on the east. This waterway helps divide the city of Bremerton into eastern and western parts.

How Water Flows Through the Narrows

The Port Washington Narrows acts like a drain for Dyes Inlet. Water from Dyes Inlet flows through this channel, which is about 3 miles (4.8 kilometers) long. From there, the water moves into Sinclair Inlet and then out into the much larger Puget Sound.

The water in the Narrows can move very quickly! Sometimes, the tidal currents can reach speeds of more than 4 knots (about 4.6 miles per hour or 7.4 kilometers per hour). This strong flow is due to the tides pushing and pulling water through the narrow space.

Connecting Bremerton's Sides

Because the Narrows splits Bremerton, bridges are needed to connect the two sides of the city. The Manette Bridge and the Warren Avenue Bridge are the two main crossings that link the eastern and western parts of Bremerton.

Along the western side of the Narrows, between the Manette Bridge and Phinney Bay, there are some important facilities. These places are used to store and move fuel, helping to supply energy to the area.
