Port of San Pedro de Macoris facts for kids
Port of San Pedro de Macoris is a busy harbor located on the Higuamo River in San Pedro de Macoris, Dominican Republic. This port is mainly used to unload large amounts of things like fertilizer, cement, coal, wheat, and fuel. It also helps export sugar and molasses made by local sugar cane farms.
History of the Port
The Port of San Pedro de Macoris is the oldest harbor in the country. It was built a long time ago, at the end of the 1800s.
In the past, this port was very important because it handled many ships that the Port of Santo Domingo couldn't manage. Ships from Europe and the United States often came to this port.
Later, the harbor became a special hub for Pan American World Airways seaplanes. This meant that the port couldn't handle as many regular ships anymore.
Today, this port is being fixed up and improved. It now handles individual cargo, helping different businesses move their goods.
