The community of Porter got its own post office a long time ago, in 1850. A post office is where people send and receive mail. This post office served the people of Porter for many years. It stayed open until 1973.
Naming Porter Township
Porter is located within a larger area called Porter Township. This township was named after a famous person: Commodore David Porter. He was an important naval officer. He served in the United States Navy during the early 1800s.
