A Glimpse into Porterville's Past
Porterville has an interesting history. It was first planned out and named East Berlin. The community started to grow when a man named Richard Porter opened a blacksmith shop there in 1850. A blacksmith is someone who works with metal, shaping it to make tools or other items.
In 1852, a post office opened in the community. A post office is where people send and receive mail. This post office was named Eaton. Even though the community was first called East Berlin, it later became known as Porterville, and also by the name Eaton, from its post office. The post office eventually closed down, but the name Eaton stuck around as another name for the area.
