A Look Back in Time
The building where the museum is located was built in the 1890s. It used to be part of a big army base called the Clarence and Victoria Barracks. Most of these barracks were taken down in 1967. However, this particular building was saved and became the Portsmouth Museum in 1972.
Sherlock Holmes and Arthur Conan Doyle
One of the most exciting parts of the museum is a special display about the famous author Arthur Conan Doyle. He created the brilliant detective Sherlock Holmes! This collection is one of the largest in the world. It includes:
- First editions of books
- Letters written by Arthur Conan Doyle
- Items from Sherlock Holmes movies and TV shows
The Story of Portsmouth
The museum also has galleries that tell the story of what it was like to live in Portsmouth through the years. These galleries are on the first floor and include sections like 'Living in Portsmouth,' ‘No Place Like Pompey,’ and ‘Portsmouth at Play.’
- Living in Portsmouth: This part shows how people lived in their homes long ago. You can see rooms set up to look like they did for different people at different times in history.
- Football in the City: If you love sports, you'll enjoy this display! It has special items from the FA Cup Finals in 1939 and 2008.
Art and Design
Throughout Portsmouth Museum, you can see beautiful fine and decorative arts. The displays change, but there is always a mix of amazing works from the museum's own collection. These include:
- Paintings and prints
- Sculptures
- Ceramics (like pottery)
- Furniture
- Glass items
- Textiles (like fabrics)
These artworks are all connected to Portsmouth and cover a long period, from the 1600s to the 1950s.
About the Building
The museum building is made of red bricks with special stone decorations. It has tile roofs. The front of the building is four stories tall and has 17 sections, called bays. On each side of the building, there are parts that stick out, like towers.
