The Hawaiian Islands are a group of islands in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. They are southwest of the United States mainland. For many years, Hawaii was its own country, called the Kingdom of Hawaii. This lasted until 1893. After that, it was briefly run by a Provisional Government of Hawaii until 1894, and then became the Republic of Hawaii until 1898. In 1898, Hawaii joined the United States as the Territory of Hawaii. Finally, in 1959, it became a US State.

Hawaii's First Stamps
The very first stamps used in Hawaii are known as the Hawaiian Missionaries. These special stamps were released in 1851. They were created by a man named Henry Martyn Whitney, whose parents were missionaries in Hawaii. These stamps are very rare and valuable today!
