Potato Project facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Potato Project is a special program run by an organization called the Society of St. Andrew (SoSA) in the United States. This program helps make sure that good food doesn't go to waste. It takes potatoes and other produce that food companies don't want and gives them to people who need them.

What is the Potato Project?

This project helps feed people and protect our planet. Since 1979, the Potato Project has saved over 500 million pounds of food. This food would have otherwise ended up in landfills, which are places where trash is buried. By saving this food, the project helps reduce waste and provides healthy meals for people in need.

Why is Food Wasted?

Sometimes, large trucks full of potatoes or other fresh produce are rejected by food companies. This can happen for many reasons. For example, potatoes might be the wrong shape or size. They might have small marks on their skin. Or, their sugar content might not be perfect for making potato chips. Even though these foods are perfectly good to eat, they are often thrown away.

How the Project Helps

The Potato Project steps in to stop this waste. Instead of letting these rejected loads go to landfills, the project redirects them. They send the food to places like food pantries, low-income housing areas, local churches, and other groups that help hungry people. These groups then give the food to those who need it most.

Making a Difference

The food itself is donated by farmers and companies. This means the Society of St. Andrew only pays for the cost of moving and packing the food. This cost is very low, about six cents for every pound of food. That's like two cents for each serving! The people who receive the food do not have to pay anything at all. This makes sure that healthy food reaches many families who might otherwise struggle to get enough to eat.
